Why “grey” WhatsApp bulk messaging kills a business number
The market is full of offers like “cheap WhatsApp bulk messaging” and “a bot without Meta approval”. They all work the same way — and they all end the same way. Let’s look at how both paths work and why the difference is fundamental.
How “grey” schemes work
A bulk-messaging program connects to the regular WhatsApp app (most often through WhatsApp Web) and pretends to be a person: it scrolls through chats and sends messages on its own. Meta explicitly prohibits such connections — and actively detects them: too many identical messages, too high a sending rate, complaints from recipients.
The outcome is always the same — the number gets blocked. First for a day, then permanently. If it’s the business’s main number, used for years to talk to clients, all the chats and contacts go down with it. It can’t be restored. Saving money on a “grey” bot turns into losing the entire communication channel.
How the official path works
WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API) is Meta’s official interface for businesses. No emulation: your server talks directly to WhatsApp’s servers, the number is registered to the company, the sender is shown with the business name and can get a green checkmark.
- The number won’t be banned just for using a bot — you’re working by the platform’s rules;
- Replies to clients are free — Meta doesn’t charge for conversations started by the client;
- Buttons, lists, templates — the official API supports interactive menus that “grey” schemes don’t have;
- Stability — it won’t break with an app update, because it doesn’t depend on the app.
“But isn’t the official route complicated and expensive?”
That’s a myth from the days when API access was only granted through large intermediaries. Today Meta connects businesses directly and for free: you only pay for business-initiated messages (cents apiece), while conversations with clients cost nothing. We broke this down with numbers in our article on the cost of a WhatsApp bot.
How to tell what you’re being offered
Ask the contractor one question: “Is this the official WhatsApp Business Platform from Meta, or a connection through WhatsApp Web?” If the answer is “well, it doesn’t matter, it works” — you’re being offered a grey scheme, and it’s your number at risk, not the contractor’s.
